stage position is everything

YMCA/Big Ring Flyers CX event in Hudson was a new one this year and I'm always down for surprises which led me to go. The promoters were not allowed to use the trails back in the woods as they intended so the course was a squiggly mess of 180s thru ribbons and stakes across mostly open fields that included some off camber. After a preride, I knew there'd be a serious bottleneck due to the layout which meant...GET THE HOLESHOT! However, my chances of that would never materialize as I came to the line late and had to start from the third row. I prefer to not be a prick and lift my rig overhead to plop it down where I feel worthy. The race panned out as expected w/the gap between the lead group and a string of chasers developing before 20 seconds went by and it would remain for the duration. It was so turny that you were limited to how fast you could go before washing out a tire. There were a handful of straights where if you had the power could open up the throttle in 40-yard dashes. Otherwise, it was a game of risk to work your way thru the competitors. Despite tailing Jen on an all day shopping spree on Saturday my legs felt great. Possibly from a breakfast of donuts and sausages prepared by an old roommate of mine, Tony Meyers, at his place in North Hudson. I washed it down w/plenty of coffee which is a must for a cyclist. Trading pulls w/my teammate during the race I moved into a secure 12th out of 35 come the end. I'm really having a good time this fall and nothing to mention in terms of aches or pains. Beginning in November I'll look to set up a peak.

Workload: six hours of commuting, [Th]45 minutes of CX drills, [F]39-minute trail run **this will be my last time running off road until '09 as my ankles need a break and leaves blanket hazards underneath**
