tutorial

Things couldn't have gone much better on this morning for my third run on the Voyaguer course that included "Jarrow's beach" on alternate years. Having the opportunity to race w/my friend and teammate Chris Gardner made the day very assured for success barring any physical injury on my part. I was thinking like an ultra guy from the moment we began and that mental aspect is definitely half the battle. With an effort slightly above or below 80% of max HR I felt this was right where I needed to keep it. Just before the drop bag location coming down into Fond Du Lac a "nature call" pulled Chris off the trail and I continued on w/o him wondering how I would manage the remainder. I don't necessarily like being a slave to data but once in the power lines I had my RPE honed in. I sustained this until the swinging bridge in Jay Cooke State Park and from that point to the end I switched my mind over to the clock as I was on a terror to break four hours. I'd probably been sore for the last 45 minutes but I still had very impressive turnover at this stage in the game! That was the only thing I didn't quite accomplish as I had a bit more realestate to cover than expected but I did out kick another guy on the Munger prior to the line. No complaints about chalking up a 5th place overall and a time of 4:01:51 according to the Duluth News Tribune.
