RACE #4, Korkki, & Bon Voyage

It was balmy and overcast in New Brighton on Saturday. Conditions were labeled fair as there was just enough snow to pull off the event. Long Lake Regional Park is huge but the course had to be trimmed down to take us for a couple abbreviated loops. More fun singletrack would be on the agenda w/a lake portion too. We shuffled along the cattails edge and docks left in the frozen water. At this point near halfway on the first lap I could assess how badly I was gapped by the leaders. I felt sluggish and this would later be confirmed from the gathered data(avg HR of 166 bpm w/a max of 180). Yet, my RPE was similar to WI a week ago but the rebound was debatable. Plus, I ran negative splits which is always satisfying! Results were 4th overall in a 47:03 clocking.

On Sunday, Jen and I went to Korkki Nordic for what seemed like a farewell ski to the season. Sunny and temperatures in the mid to upper 30s. Plenty of base still and the tracks were quite full of debris but didn't bother our glide except for one spot. Reaching the 6k cutoff we noticed a woodpecker had been busy on a tree next to the trail as chips made for a hazard(excellent kick though). A casual 45 minutes did nicely.

Currently, I've already begun a fortnight of no training!! With no injuries to mention and having accomplished everything right on the mark I've decided to go on a sabbatical. I'll be flying to Orlando, FL w/Jen and a bunch of her family @ 6:00 AM Friday. Saturday, we'll board the Carnival Cruise Inspiration in Tampa for five days w/stops in Grand Cayman and Cozumel for excursions. At most, I'll do some strength and flexibility workouts on the state-of-the-art fitness equipment or reserve a yoga class. Following this will be Seaworld, Busch Gardens, etc. Oh, I can't forget to mention the FOOD!!!
